The dynamic partnership of Hugh Thorson and Terry Flatley blends their exceptionally successful construction careers with their common goal of building superior residential and commercial properties. Besides being hands-on “old fashioned” builders who do not compromise quality, their depth of experience, excellent reputations and financial strength are significant considerations when contemplating the purchase of a new home or when leasing office space.

Terry FlatleyTerry Flatley began his career fresh-out-of-school as an apprentice plumber, learning the trade during the housing boom of the early sixties in California’s San Fernando Valley. He found himself fascinated by the seemingly impossible task of coordinating all of the dozens of trades it took to complete a project… this was a challenge he could not resist. To pursue his interest, he joined the local carpenters union, and started at the bottom, as a job-site laborer. Soon he was promoted to framer, then to assistant job superintendent, then superintendent, on to superintendent of larger projects and finally to vice-president in charge of all residential communities, supervising multiple locations for some of the largest builders in Southern California.
When the opportunity to join a partnership building a golf course community in Santa Maria presented itself, Terry moved to the Central Coast and Flatley Homes, Inc. was formed. That was more than three decades ago, and he has been building homes on the Coast and the Central Valley ever since. Terry has earned a singular reputation for building quality homes and backing them with superior customer service. His sons have since joined him in the business bringing new technology and synergies to the company. Of all the partnerships and thousands of homes built, Terry considers his association with Hugh to be a distinct pleasure.

Hugh ThorsonHugh Thorson graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1949 after a delay in his education caused by a “call to duty” from the United States Navy. Upon graduation he earned his Registered Professional Engineer license but quickly migrated toward a career in construction. His business primarily concentrated on residential homes, land development and investment real estate, although he also built a number of industrial and commercial projects along the way.
He and his wife Mary escaped the winters of Minnesota in 1973 and relocated to Santa Barbara, where he has been involved in a number of widely acclaimed projects, including Shadow Hills and Forte Ranch Homes. Among the many honors and prestigious positions attained in his career, Hugh is a Life-Time Director of the National Association of Home Builders and over the years has served on countless educational and political committees and is Past Chairman of the National Housing Industry. Having been involved in the housing industry for the past 57 years, Hugh is pleased and proud to be associated with Terry Flatley.

Over the past several years, Hugh and Terry have shouldered the responsibility of designing and building communities together. They both feel the homes they build will last a lifetime, and have a deep respect for the enduring quality of real estate and the important place it has in people’s lives. In their partnership, Terry runs the “day-to-day” construction operations and Hugh guides land acquisitions, finances, and both are instrumental in architectural design decisions. Current projects include 112 single family upscale homes in Lemoore and 144 patio homes in Hanford California; 89 river side estates near Carson City Nevada; and mixed-use commercial-residential communities in Santa Maria and Nipomo California.
